“US” marking in an oval. The “US” stamp inside an oval is typical of American military equipment. This type of marking was used especially before and during World War I. After the 1930s, the markings and designs changed. Thick, rigid, vegetable-tanned leather (not modern leather). Simple stitching, without modern reinforcements or complex industrial rivets. Very different from World War II holsters (which usually have “lift-the-dot” snaps or more standardized designs). The closure with a simple metal stud or button and hole is typical of old holsters. Later holsters (WWII onwards) use more sophisticated snap fasteners. It appears to be designed for large revolvers, very common in the late 19th century. Colt Army / Navy. Smith & Wesson military models. It is not a holster for a semi-automatic pistol, which also points to a pre-1920s era. The wear, greenish oxidation on the metal (verdigris), and the texture of the leather indicate many decades of age, not something artificially aged. Military or governmental U. Army or auxiliary forces. Spanish-American War (1898). Pre-World War I period. Late 19th-century guard or cavalry. ? Probable origin: American military. ? Authenticity: Appears original, not a modern reproduction.
